Sex and Violence

I recently watched a film called "Hostel." It is basically a playboy video for an hour and then a snuff film for 30 minutes. My wife stopped watching about 15 minutes from the end, but I can't do that. Somewhere in some movielover code of ethics I am sure it says you must finish every movie you start regardless of the consequences. Anyways, we didn't really enjoy the film and we discussed whether we would rather have our son watch "Hostel" or some random porno. We came to the conclusion that the porno was the safer choice. At least we could explain that people enjoy sex so some people do it for cash. Not a pretty conversation but much better than answering the question, "Why would someone burn another persons eyeball out?" That has no answer. Do you just say that there are some royally screwed up people out there and if a hot girl with large boobs ever takes you to a run-down factory after sex then get the hell outta there? I would rather explain why some girl is kissing another girl before I answer that question.
I also got to thinking: how could a gratuitously violent film like "Hostel" get an R rating when a film like "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut" gets an NC-17 and must be cut down for saying F*** and S*** too many times and offending too many people. It is awful funny how it is perfectly okay to show extreme torture in mainstream cinema, yet dirty words or the sight of two men or women kissing elicits the greatest of protests. We are a supremely messed up culture indeed.
